Our story
Chewy’s Bagels began with a love for baking—and a fridge full of bagels. Ashley began her baking journey in French pastry, but didn’t love all the sugar that came with it. Her husband, Matt, suggested she try making bagels, and she was hooked from the start, constantly experimenting with new recipes.
Baking out of her home, demand quickly grew. When Outpost Richmond asked to start carrying her bagels, she needed a commercial kitchen. She moved into Hatch Kitchen RVA, producing bagels for wholesale and local deliveries.
With bagel lovers lining up and orders pouring in, it was time to take the next step. In spring 2022, Chewy’s Bagels found a home in the former Jean Jacques Bakery, and we’ve been growing ever since—fermenting and baking sourdough bagels with heart, one batch at a time.
So who
Is Chewy?
Chewy isn’t just the name behind our bagels—he’s the heart of our story! While deployed in Afghanistan, Ashley and Matt met and adopted Chewy, a loyal and resilient Kuchi dog. Kuchi dogs, native to Afghanistan, are the trusted guardians and herding dogs of the region’s nomadic peoples, known for their independence, strength, and unwavering loyalty—just like the leap of faith we took in starting Chewy’s Bagels.
Chewy represents everything we believe in: adventure, perseverance, and taking chances on something you love. His spirit inspired us to bring naturally fermented sourdough bagels to Richmond, crafted with the same dedication and heart that brought him into our lives.
